    January & February 2015 Recreation Events

    January 2015

     

    THE PAGETURNER’S BOOK CLUB

    What: A once monthly book club that engages in thought provoking discussions about the book of the month. The Page-turner's book club accepts members on an ongoing basis. Please call about transportation options, book titles, and assistance with obtaining audio books. The book the group will be discussing this month is Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather.

    When: The club meets the first Monday of each month from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

    Where: Colie’s Sidewalk Café, Pittsford Plaza, 3349 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, NY

    RSVP: On a monthly basis, one week prior to meeting.


    WE ARE MERRY SENIORS (WAMS)

    What: This lively over 60 club meets monthly for a lunch and special program. The WAMS group has some of the original members that started the group over 30years ago! The special programs include health and wellness, music, community resource presentations, games and much more! In January, the group will be learning about all the resources available at the ABVI library.

    When: The second Wednesday of every month from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30p.m.

    Where: ABVI, 500 South Clinton Avenue

    Cost: Lunch is a senior center meal provided by ABVI's Food Service Department for a suggested donation of $3.

    RSVP: To JoAnn Vaccaro at (585) 327– 5520 on a monthly basis, one week prior to meeting.


    The M.I.N.D series are informational sessions held on the third Tuesday of the month at ABVI.

    SMOKING CESSATION

    What: Cassie Gratton, director of The Smoking and Health Action Coalition of Monroe County and The American Lung Association will speak on smoking cessation, strategies to help quit smoking, and the health benefits of quitting smoking.

    When: Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

    Where: ABVI, 500 South Clinton Ave, Rochester

    CAN YOU NAME 5? GAME NIGHT AT ABVI!

    What: Can you name 5 things that could make a person sneeze? How about 5 T.V. dads, or horror movie monsters? Come play Name 5, an outrageous party game that is sure to have you racking your brain for at least 5 of the right answers. This game will be adapted to be played in teams. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

    When: Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 5:30p.m. – 7:30p.m.

    Where: ABVI, 500 South Clinton Avenue

    Cost: $3 for pizza. If needed, transportation can be arranged for an additional $10 (within Monroe County).

    DANCING WINGS BUTTERFLY GARDEN AT THE STRONG NATIONAL MUSEUM OF PLAY

    What: Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden is the only year-round indoor butterfly garden in upstate NY. Enter a lush rain forest environment and walk among approximately 1,000 brilliantly colored, free flying tropical and native butterflies that flutter about (and may even land on you!). A paved path leads guests through tropical foliage, a turtle pond, and cascading waterfall. After exploring the butterfly garden, tour the rest of the museum at your leisure.

    When: Friday, January 30, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

    Where: The Strong National Museum of Play, One Manhattan Square, Rochester, NY

    Cost: $10 includes admission to the museum and a ticket to the butterfly garden. If needed, transportation can be arranged for an additional $10 (within Monroe County).

    February 2015

    YOGA

    What: Explore the path of yoga. A mindful and fun class focusing on spinal health, alignment, breath work and most importantly, relaxation. Learn foundational skills that can be easily synthesized into a home practice as well.

    Monday, February 2, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Thursday, February 12, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Thursday, February 19, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Thursday, February 26, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

    Where: ABVI, 500 South Clinton Avenue

    Cost: $5 per session. If needed, transportation can be arranged for an additional $10 per session (within Monroe County).

    DAILY STRETCHES FOR MAXIMUM MOBILITY

    What: The benefits of stretching are numerous. Stretching every day can add to your overall well-being and help you to remain independent. Learn the benefits of engaging in a daily stretching routine and how it can benefit you and your life. You will also learn and practice some simple stretches to do on a daily basis. Wear loose and comfortable clothing, including athletic footwear.

    When: Tuesday, February 17, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
